Hiper Type M 880W PSU Review Print E-mail

PCWizKid not too long ago reviewed the Hiper Osiris Mid Tower Case which is truly a quality product, today we have the opportunity to see if the Hiper Type M 880 Watt Power Supply can compliment it as well and follow through with another winner.

When it comes to PSU's the first thing you should be looking for is that it meets the power needs your gaming rig will require for example.  A typical 2009 desktop PC these days with mainstream 2009 parts will not require more than a 650 to 700 Watt power capacity.  The reason I say 650W minimum is because with technology changing and our demands for both upgrading our PC will always be there, you want to have that little more buffer and peace of mind that you can later on add more hardware without upgrading your power supply to meet the new demands.  If you are hardcore gamer or running a gaming rig with multiple GPU's (CrossfireX or SLI) then you should always get minimum a 800Watt PSU.   The Hiper Type M 880W in this case will be put to the test with a system that is fairly demanding but not extreme.

TEST SYSTEM SPECS

PCWizKid's Test system uses the latest AMD Phenom II processors, AMD 790GX based motherboards, and the well known ATI HD Radeon 4800 series graphics cards.  AMD refers this combination of hardware as the "Dragon" platform used for hardcore gaming rigs.

- Phenom II 720 X3, overclocked at 3.4Ghz (200Mhz bus speed x 17 multiplier)

  • Core voltage was raised to 1.475v for a stable system at that high frequency.  The no load temperature was 24C and full load temperature was 30C. Ambient room temperature was 20 Celsius during all tests.

- Asus M3A78-T Motherboard
- Diamond HD4870 x2 2GB (Dual GPU)

  • Video card was overclocked to 790Mhz x2 Core clock and 990Mhz (2000Mhz Effectively x2) memory clock
  • The AMD ATI Radeon Catalyst drivers version were updated to version 9.2
  • ATI Overdrive was tweaked manually and the fan was set to at least 40-60% speed
  • DirectX 10 was used

- Kingston HyperX 4GB DDR2 1066, settings were 5-5-5-18 @2.2v
- Cooler Master V8 CPU Cooler
- D-link Wireless G PCI Card
- Hiper Osiris Mid Tower Case (with 2 internal 120mm Fans)
- Replaced the front intake fan with a Silverstone F123 variable fan , which was used between 1200 to 2600 RPM
- Seagate v12 500GB SATA Hard drive
- LG 22x SATA DVDRW Drive
- Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit SP1 fully up to date

The Hiper Type M 880W impressed me in the following, its efficiency, regulation and quality construction.  These were excellent. The consistency in delivery of power to the system at full load without a hiccup demonstrated the quality this PSU has to offer.  I must say that adding the ExTender cables that were included saved the day, because the existing PCIe 6pin and 8pin connector was not long enough for the large HD4870x2 card I had, if it wasn't for those ExTenders my impression on the PSU may have gone south, however, it did not and I was very impressed at the design aswell which made this a terrific performance PSU for those looking to have multiple GPU's and power a substantial amount of hardware in their gaming rig.
